A step in a direction that I did not even consider at the start of this year.
A step in a direction that I did not even consider at the start of this year.
I have taken ownership of a touring bike: Yamaha FJR 1300 A
Why you may ask?
Big torquey motor, big comfortable pillion seat, big electric adjustable screen, panniers big enough for helmets, ‘tis a big bike, but not as HUGE as most tourers.
A few time this year I have had my darling misses on the back of my bikes as a pillion.
She did not like the seat on the R nineT.
She thought the MT-09 Tracer was good at the time, but only because she had not experienced a touring bike (neither had I at that time).
A couple of weeks ago I happened to take a FJR for a run to drop something off at my wife’s work, then took her for a wee run on it.
Bloody obvious really, but the ability of the FJR to carry a pillion with ease was…obvious.
It is a touring bike, designed for touring with a pillion and luggage.
My lad has rarely used his bike since he passed his driving test and got a car. We did not renew his bike insurance, so I traded his 125 Honda for the FJR.
As I mentioned to my wife, we have not increased the number of bikes in the household, just swapped out to get the right tools for the jobs.

Very sensible though, some internal heated vests, satnav and a phone charger and you will be sorted

Re: A step in a direction that I did not even consider at the start of this year.
The FJR has surprised me a few times in my short time of ownership and about 6000 miles.
I am surprised how easy it is to ride, and its ability to make a bit of progress. As well as its easy of handling on the move.
Mind you it is a heavy lump to manually push about.
The run in to work this morning…that FJR, again it has surprised me.
An amazingly stable run with such strong winds beating lumps out of the trees.
With the screen in its highest position, no topbox or panniers, the aerodynamic bubble seams to absorb the buffeting once you are on the move.
I thought the R1200 GS Adventure was a stable bike in bad weather…but I think the FJR wins that challenge.
Not a surprise really if you look at the bikes with fresh eyes.
I previously said that if I could only have one bike, a R1200 GS would be that bike, last year I amended that statement to put the R1200 RS in the mix.
I would say that the FJR 1300 has now elevated its status in my listing.
None of those three are my favourite bikes , but for all-round ability and comfort , their ranking is the top.

My favourite bike is usually the one I am riding.
Never had one I didn't enjoy, even my old C90 step thru and Her Indoors' 100 cc Peugeot scooter.
