Tool Bias -

Post by Zathos »

I have had my current socket set and spanners for many years and they have served me well with much motorcycle servicing completed. I can't say it was always done well, but that isn't the tools fault ;)

Anyway, I had reason to need a 20mm socket.

Not one to be found in the set, not in 1/4" or 1/2" drive. Not even a 20mm spanner. Everything up to 19mm then 21mm, 22mm, 24mm.

Two thoughts cross my mind [after much swearing and use if the trusty adjustable spanners]

1. Why no 20mm socket
2. Why has it taken me years to spot?

I was using an 18mm socket yesterday, from my Drapper Green Line set that I bought when I was 17.
That set is still complete, and has a 20mm socket.

I also have a tool set of metric and imperial tools, which has 20mm socket , ring and open spanner.

At a previous job a number of tool boxes were returned from offshore with no owners, which were just going to be binned...so I acquired a number of very handy tools, and I am sure there may have been numerous 20mm items

Zathos, I can easily loan you a 20mm socket or spanner.
...mind you I think a deposit and signed/witnessed contract may be required

Was it something obscure that needed a 20mm socket? I can't ever remember having to loosen or tighten anything important that size.

I dug out my old socket set from back in my 'early' days and there is a 20mm socket there.

I was assembling an engine hoist and needed the 20mm socket for a couple of the bolts. Very odd size indeed.

Must be an oddball size that isn't used much in modern kit. :log :log

I think the very fact that it has taken many years to discover that the set has no 20mm socket, perhaps explains why they never bothered in the first place.

I can't remember the last time i needed one, but then again, whats wrong with the old faithful vice grips ;)
