A great weekend by Cal Crutchlow who seems to love the Phillip Island circuit. I can't say I was displeased to see Marc throw it away.

John McPhee was also having a great weekend until his accident, which scared the sh*te out of me. Considering where he went down and that Bastianini went right over him at speed, it's incredible that he came away with no major injuries and just a broken thumb. When he laid motionless in the grass immediately after the accident memories of the Capirossi incident flooded back.

McPhee was doing an excellent job up until that point. You could see he was unconscious by the way he was rolling like a rag doll. So lucky to get away with just a broken thumb!

Reading through all the messages of support from everyone and can't thank you all enough!!

I'm feeling okay, bit stiff all over as expected but ill be here in Melbourne for the next week or so as I've got a little damage to my lungs so need to keep an eye on them before I fly.

Hoping to have my thumb operated on in the next couple of days then be back to full fitness asap. Big thanks to all the medical staff at PI circuit, Clinica mobile, my team and of course Knox SCORPION SPORTS EUROPE IXS Sports and Alpinestars for keeping me safe and away from too much damage

Well that makes a little more sense. I was surprised there weren't any internal injuries reported considering the impact from the other bike.

Medical update: John faces enforced stay in Australia for treatments and recovery

Following further tests in the STD. Kilda Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, doctors have now found that both of John’s lungs were perforated in the Phillip Island crash and he has lost around 40% of their function at present. He has been told this will heal naturally but it will take some weeks to regain their performance.

He can exercise gently to help their healing and has a further appointment in two weeks to check progress. At this time, they are now suggesting he will not be able to fly for four to five weeks. So as a result of this he will get an enforced holiday down under!

Today John’s parents have driven him upcountry to the specialist who will operate on his thumb and make additional checks as the further tests have also shown some displacement of other bones in his hand.

He is staying positive, but is naturally very frustrated that his recovery will take some time. He will not only miss the last two races this year, just when his crew had really got the Peugeot performing at its best, but may now be excluded from end of season tests to prepare for next year.

John ask us to thank you all so much for your messages of support here and on Facebook – it means a huge amount to him!
