Battery or have i f**ked the electrics ?????

Post by RobboTheRod »

Hello all,
I'm need of some advice or help please. Here's the story. On sat, finally managed to get my bike away from my ex at Inverurie to my flat in town. Bike was sitting in her back garden all Winter. Turned up on Sat moring, obviously no charge in the Battery at all. So me and pal run up & down her street (looked like complete tits) trying to bump start it in second, got a little signs of life. Then finally stuck on the portable charger we had with us and sure enough started. Managed to get her back into town, but was still obvouis little charge in the battery. Once i parked her up, i tried to start her again. Now all I'm getting is a clear clicking sound from the battery.
Now is this that the battery just needs more charge or is this more of a fucked electrical prblem? I'm hoping that i havn't knackered the electrics using the portable charger, as i know you can if you charge directly from a car battery?? Will a new battery be in order???

Any advice or suggestions anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

P.S: Could anyone tell me what the correct method is to charge from a car battery?
Cheers,

Don’t panic

The clicking sound is probably due to not enough grunt left in the battery to turn over the engine.

Once charged you should be ok

If jumping for another vehicle, DO NOT have that other vehicle engine running.
That could fry your sensitive electrical bits.

Then a simple:
RED to RED
BLACK to BLACK
Bike in neutral
Keep clutch pulled in (as normal)
Push your starter, and engine should start.

If engine turns but not firing, there could be a problem with the petrol being off.
Fixed by filling up with new petrol.

Petrol is a spirit, and not in a sealed container, then the good stuff in to evaporates, just like whisky, but not as nice tasting.

And, keep all body parts away from metal components, or you may feel the trickle of electrickery trying to find the ground

Cheers Dave, legend.
Will get a mate round tonight with the charger and then take it for a long run. Hopefully that will sort the beast out. Then maybe i could stop being a fanny and get out on the thing.

Many thanks,

:stupid

beware that batteries can discharge to a point which causes permanent damage. Try the trickle charger but if it`s constantly dying it could be shot past repair.

As above.
Best option for battery recovery is something like an Optimate, but battery may be beyond help.

Yes, just sounds like the battery needs a charge. Agree with above regards completely discharging the battery. Likely to fcuk it and may not hold a charge for very long in future.

Also beware condensation in your fuel. If it seems to misfire for a while and then stop altogether, could be water in the carbs. Drain the carbs and give tank a flush with some new fuel anyway as the fuel in there will be shizzle. Unleaded tends to goo up needles in carbs if left for a long time.

You can get an additive for the fuel if it is going to be left for a while or you intend to run the tank dry.

Yup. :2up

Not so easy to find locally. I got it from M&P when I needed it.
