Chain and Sprockets

Post by blagger »

Ok just a quick question..

on my 97 SRAD i'm running standard 16T/45T, now the 98 and above SRAD's run as 16T/46T as standard, i know that changing the gearing will effect the speedo reading but was wondering how much would it effect the speedo reading if i went +1 on the rear so that i was running 16T/46T the same as the 98 SRADs, only asking as most online companies i have been searching for deals on chain and sprocket kits show up as 98-00 models and a few saying 97-00 but the 97 as i said has 1 less tooth on the rear..

Going up 1 tooth in the back will give you a difference of about 2.18%
Taking the stock gearing as 16/46 up to 16/47. So 1 tooth on the back does not give you much change.

Going 1 tooth down in the front will give you a difference of about 6.68%
Taking the stock gearing as 16/46 DOWN to 15/46. So 1 tooth on the front % wise gives gives you 3 times as much change. (it is approx 1/3rd the size )

so in answer to the Question not a lot of change in the registered speed. :2up

This is a good site if you are thinking of changing your gearing, unfortunately it does not tell you what your Speedo inaccuracy would be

http://www.gearingcommander.com/

It only lists the '01-'03 but you can input your ratio manually :2up

cheers thats a help.. not really planning to mess about the gearing to much to adjust the bottom end or top end, its just purely for my options on sprocket and chain selection/deals as some sites class their selection as 97-00 and others 98-00 and since the 97 is 1 tooth less than the 98 how can they class it as the same hot botty. since going 1 up on rear wont make much difference then that helps me on my choice as well..

Cheers

Here's the maths to work it all out yourself.....

Original ratio = 16/45 = 0.3556
New ratio = 16/46 = 0.3478

Change in speedo read out will be the ratio change between the two.

ie 0.3556 / 0.3478 = 1.022.

Thus 50 mph will read 50 x 1.022 = 51.1 mph

Same method can be used to calculate any gearing change......

Original ratio = 16/45 = 0.3556
New ratio = 15/45 = 0.3333

Change in speedo read out will be the ratio change between the two.

ie 0.3556 / 0.3333 = 1.067.

Thus 50 mph will read 50 x 1.067 = 53.4 mph

kool thats handy to know how you work it out.. i will keep a note of that :freebird
