Oil Pan replacement/fix

Post by jamesy121 »

I have a Kawasaki er6-f 2009 and was doing an oil change and when putting back the oil sump plug using the torque wrench I have made a jester off myself oops by over tighteneing the bolt and guffed the thread in the sump,it still tightens slightly but not enough to stop a leak, I have looked at awe thing from hell coil to over sized bolts I have spoken to ecosse and the said they could rebore it and it would be a couple hours work, £120 that would be plus parts, thinking I can get a new pan for less and was wondering how easy a job it is to replace I am a bit of a novice can do basic stuff, I tried looking online for vids or instructions on how to replace said sump but can't find much. How difficult is it, any help would be much appreciated on the best way to go here.

Looks like you'll be over £100 in parts before you even start to replace the sump. Sump, gasket and new drain plug. I don't know how the engine is mounted, but you may have to remove it to have space to remove the sump...

Best to shop around garages - Shirlaws, the guy in Jopps Lane, Neil at Craigston in oldmeldrum. Or hold out for someone to offer to do it as a homer.

You'll need to take the sump off at least to avoid any metal swarf inside. You could do that yourself and then take it to a machine shop for re-threading. That would probably be a bit cheaper and the money you save could be invested towards a torque wrench to avoid similar mishaps in the future.

Good luck. :2up

Thanks for the advice, I have checked and on this bike it is only the muffler that needs to be dropped, then you can get at it from their, so ideally would like to replace the sump..I like your idea of someone doing a homer :2up so if there is anyone out there who would like to help out...I have cash, beer, snacks, biscuits, drugs, and woman available :cheers

I would scour the breakers for a replacement sump. There are currently three for sale on fleeBay. That could be your easiest option? Make sure you buy the correct part for your bike.

Grabbing a 2nd hand sump would be my first choice but you could always resize to the next size up if you want to save a few quid...

Google reckons your current plug is M12 so you'd be looking to remove the sump, run a decent 12mm HSS drill bit down the bore to remove what's left of the old threads then grab a M14 tap to suit your new plug.

12mm Drillbit = £10
M14 Tap = £10
M14 Sump Plug = £15

Ideally, you'd want to do this with a pedestal drill but really, it'll be alright as long as you take your time and keep the drill as square as possible. The thread is only little and the tap will make light work of the cheese metal sump.

Good luck. :2up
