I did a similar thing on my Bandit to mount the front indicators.

You get strips of aluminum out of B&Q and just spray it with matt paint.

In Kawasaki's defence I think that they're obliged to fit a rear mudguard that projects beyond the wheel. That's why they make it so easy to remove (possibly for track days too, but the Z1000 is the same and it's more road-biased).
