K+n filters

I'll be servicing the SV1000 next week once I get back from WCIII, are K+N (or similar) air filters any better than the standard ones or is it all just marketing?
The bike has race cans on it but is otherwise standard.

I stuck one on my ZXR and it improved the sound of the airbox :)

I got some great advice about K&N's, Pipercross etc and that was that yes, they allow more air in, but with that comes more dust and dirt if they are not kept oiled and clean. Once a year cleaning is not enough and should really be done 2 or 3 times a year. Also, as more air gets sucked through it leans out the fueling, especially with race cans on so get the bike set up properly.

You can throw them on and just run standard, but you will not be getting the best from them...but you could say that about cans too :)

At a service, the bikeshop will not clean and oil them but you dont need to replace them..so thats a Â£20+ saving at each service..but remember to clean them yourself.

They are also easy enough to clean, best to use the proper K&N stuff.
It worked a treat on my RC car filter.

just bought one for the car

the bike already had one

if its fuel injected and has a mass air flow sensor ther'll be no problems with running too lean

They say, and I refer to tuners, that the only benefit is that they are reusable.

But who knows.

Doesnt really help does it.

Thats exactly what Ive heard and experienced as well. No real benefit.

Hmm bit strange that!

stage one kit for my car includes K&N filter
V&M racing built 1200 comes with K&N filter

I can understand tuners saying that stand alone K&N filters don't work or that the increase in heat in the area where induction kits for cars negates any benefit.
however when considered that most performance enhancements are to do with gas flow to and from the engine the most notable being turbos supercharges and NOS all looking to get more oxygen into the engine then any improvement in airflow must be beneficial.
but thats just my opinion and experience with engine design I suppose :I can't believe it's not butter!

Let more air into the airbox, but whether that air actually gets into the cylinders in unkown (by me) due to the pulsing effect of the combustion chambers.

You need to keep them oiled for obvious reasons, but this oil WILL get onto the MAF meter. Eventualy if this gets coated in the oil and dust the MAF will fook up, and you need to get a new one.
