<<I have played about on a 990 Adventure on gravel tracks, grassy fields, loose earth mounds, deep snow and ice>>
Would you use it on gravel tracks, loose earth mounds, deep snow and ice (grassy fields intentionally omitted) when fully loaded with expedition gear, a long way from a service agent? This is potential bucket list stuff here so any advice would be most welcome.
I have no intention of recourse if your judgement is wrong but I would appreciate your opinion as you say that you are a former owner of a KTM.
Many thanks
Zara

Don't get a KTM.
Admittedly I do tend to use machinery towards the upper ends of it's operating envelopes, but my 1290 Superduke had a manufacturing related failure after 10k miles leading to a complete rebuild. My 625 SMC also just had a rebuild, although that was more to do with it having been sat in a former owner's garage for a good few years then being pushed hard by me, than a manufacturing issue.
Fantastic machines, but I'm quite happy being able to get parts delivered to my nice warm house, not a tent in the boonies somewhere while "adventuring".

I tend to agree. I've only had one (KTM 690r). A fantastic fun machine, but it broke down on me in the middle of the jungle in Brunei one time (about 30 km from any tarmac). My 11 year old daughter was with me too!
The only way to start it was with the starter motor and it had a tiny battery. As I made several attempts to start it after each fiddle I could hear the battery draining each time.
I was very lucky to find a small 4x4 using the same track that managed to tow us out before nightfall.
For a long adventure I would definitely choose something more agricultural and definitely with a kick start.
In this case it turned out to be a dodgy suppressor cap.

Because your 990 had zero defects?

New bike collected from my work today, had a decent run on it and glad I made the choice to get this one. Just needing to fit the Akrapovic exhaust and decat pipe to finish it for now. And yes Dave, the brakes work fine before you ask again!

A fine looking bike. And one of the best views of its owner

I had a clean and lube (I can't believe it's not butter!) session with the bikes, first time they have been outside together.
The one in the foreground is a 1977 Honda TL125, got a smidge over 1000 miles on the clock, about 300 of them happen in the garden.
I bought it as a field bike, so my lads could learn to ride before getting anywhere near tarmack. It has done a fine job over the years.
Dopey got here has not had it running this year, so the poor wee thing needs some tlc.

Cylinders, 1 thru 4
That was not the plan, just sort of happened.
