You could certainly weld it, you'd have to make sure that the areas you were welding onto are sound so you get rid of all the corrosion.
If it's pinholes through the steel and the surrounding areas are good you could weld spots with Mig or Tig, if it's a big patch it's a lot harder because of the heat input required and the possible distortion.
Also make sure that the inside of the tank is OK because any corrosion there will make its way into the fuel, and would be hard to treat effectively.
It may be less hassle to get another tank.

use plastic steel, Devcon make some, you eliminate the problems of blowing up your garage and warping the tank in one easy movement...

A MIG welder is wire fed and TIG is an electrode.
Hope this helps to establish what kind of welder you have.

Before you try welding have a good look at the inside of the tank using a mirror and a torch, if it's corroded from the inside out then it's probably scrap anyway.
What bike is it for?

It's a Suzuki GS 1000 but the tank is from a GS 850.
The GS 850 clutch is a brilliant bit of kit. I got an adaptor made up and shoehorned one into my Vincent 1000.

Best way of dealing with a tank like that is to solder it. Build up the solder until it is proud then then file away the excess.
