I have a few links on my chain siezed, solid a group of 3 then another one further round, I have tried soaking in petrol for an hour but still no joy.
If anybody has any ideas how to solve this that would be great failing that I will have to get a new chain.
My neighbor is a mechanic(also has bikes) he told me that the chain not worn and recomended the petrol soak.
I have been looking on the tinternet for chains but most places stop at 2005 model Fazer 1000 mine 2006.
I will give Eccosse a call in the morning but not holding up hope for a quick fix as they been real busy lately.
Planning on doing a west coast run leaving on Friday any ideas ??

if you get a chain and a riviter i can do it for you

I've had a chain snap on me before so I'd recommend replacing the chain if you have seized links.

What you need is a 530 chain with 122 links.

Surely eccosse would have chains sitting about ?? or would they??

I have a shot of my mate's chain riveter and a grinder, so if you can get a chain I'll do my best to help you out.

ok aye they should have a chain.

You'd be as well changing your sprockets at the same time. It's recommended you change chain and sprockets together.

Only done 18000 miles bike not long serviced nothing mentioned about excessive wear, I also thought it would be needing pads but seemingly no

Confused now as not really know what things to really look out for on a bike, I am mechanically minded but I do prefer just to jump on and ride off it's a lot more fun than cleaning it etc.

Thought it would be a bad idea to soak your chain in petrol especially an "O" ring or "X" ring as this would damage the seals ??

yep i agree to both of the above. get yourself new chain and new sprockets and keep em chain lubed more regularly and you wil NOT encounter this link seizure problem ever again

your 100% spot on there nicky , ive been told wd40 is bad for O + X rings in bike chains too , chain maintainance is very important on any size of bike ie its tension an how often its lubed , seized links would tell u that your O or X rings r prob fecked an water has got in an rust has formed in the links causing them to seize

What do people use to clean and lube (I can't believe it's not butter!) their chain?

I use parrafin to clean the chain and Wurth's dry chain lube (I can't believe it's not butter!).

I cleaned my chain once. I used AutoGlym degreaser. It worked a treat, even Matt was proud of my efforts. The phase didn`t last long though. i now use the rain to wash crud off.

Exactly the same as me (or Castrol chain wax after a brush with oil) If the chain was real bad i would (personally) Remove chain, clean with parafin then soak in engine oil for a few days working the links every now and again

Hi all, Thanks for all your advice/tips.
Yammie does keep the chain lubed & does clean the bike quite a lot, he recently had it serviced with Ecosse & asked about brake pads etc but was told it didnt need anything done so as you can all guess this has come as a surprise to him but probably just one of those things.
He has been looking into chain sprockets from work so he will keep you all posted, once again Thanks.

As GLred says thanks for all the help/advice have now booked it into eccosse for chain, sprockets and scot oiler to be fitted.

As for the few digs of not lubing chain regular this is not the case, I am not a fair weather biker, my bike gets run in all weathers rain,sleet or snow(providing it's not too deep ) so I expect to encounter problems through dirt/salt contamination but your comments have been taken on board and when I get home I will severly reprimand myself

After 1800 miles think its a new bike you need then no need to bother with new chain

BUY A SHAFTIE LOT LESS HASSLE ,, then you dont have to worry about chains and sprockets , down side there aint a lot of choice

Now now bruv we still got a lot of fun time on our baby so No new bike

i personally wouldnt trust every word that came out most mechanics mouths , he could hav jus looked at your chain when it was in getting serviced an thought stuff that i cant be arsed changing a chain an sprockets today cos its a messy fiddly job , in my experience some mechanics who work/worked in aberdeen dont actually own bikes an therefore dont really care about customers bikes as long as they get paid at the end of the week , there are very few decent mechanics left working in the bike shops in aberdeen in my opinion ,

your bikes manual should tell u everything u need to know about chain maintainance/life etc , i would personally pay more attention to that

u would be cheaper buying a decent chain riveting tool an doing the job yourself , that way u would know it had been done right as im sure some people on here (including myself) would hav offered u help if u had needed it

I do appreciate the advice and offers of help, I am now curious as why not to trust mechanics when they work for a dealer who have never let me down and have went ou of their way to help me at every opportunity.
Yes some people have had bad experiences from certain dealers and some from others, so does that mean stock up on tools and learn to do things myself?? I personally would not trust myself to replace chain and sprockets, I would be too scared to cause more damage.

I was also told today that scott oilers were a nightmare, yet a percentage on here swear by them so who do I listen to

You make up your own mind. I visit a message board for the make of my bike and they are split as well as to the benefits of a scotoiler, be it single or duel nozzle
