Last time I used my tail pack I wasn't bothered about marking the bike as I had the scabby yellow rear end on Adolf. Will be needing to use it in a couple of weeks time and I don't want to mark the new rear end. There are the round bits of material that are supposed to stop the bungees rubbing the paintwork but these move quite easily and not reliable enough. Any suggestions on what I can do to prevent any marks? I have an Oxford tail pack, (same as what you used to have Grant).

Dont do a me and scratch the crap out of your bike with amaturish errors. You never live it down....

Hahah, I don't do rucksacks on big trips. Can't use a tank bag as I'd not manage to see over it

Maybe i should just put on the old arse end again so save damaging the new one!

The tankbag is quite low down when its collapsed so it would be fine for you. I am popping over to Rowans at some tomorrow maybe and can drop it there if you want to try it out. Up to you.

Cheers for the offer but i don't think i'd feel comfortable riding with a tank bag and i don't pack lightly either haha. I'll just have to come up with something that will stop my bike being scratched to f*ck.

There's nowt wrong with Suzuki paintwork

Just get one of those padding sheets (can't remember the name, but £10 from a bike shop, cheaper from a DIY store), drape it over the pillion seat and use the short flat bungy cords with plastic hooks. I've got an Oxford tailpack and never done any damage to the surrounding bodywork.

Rucksacks are bad news on long journeys, tankbags just get in the way

Lynners, I put a teatowel underneath my tankbag and have never had it scratch the tank. The same does keep the tail from getting scratched by panniers and tailpack but can be a pain to get in the correct position (hence me not bothing once or twice and ending up with a scuffed tail unit ).

Go to b&Q and get roll of non slip drawer stuff. It is like a web design that stops things slipping about in drawers it used to be beside the wallpaper .

This is used by lots of people under there luggage and is good for stopping passengers slipping on rear seat

I clart the back of the bike with insulating tape to stop the bungees touching the paintwork at all.
The only problem with towels or the drawer stuff is that small stones can get inbetween the towel and paint and dull the surface.

Fit a top box!

Presume insulating tape wont peel away the decals when it's removed then?

I use clear duck tape - works a treat

i attatched my oxford tail pack to an old back seat i aquired , it just clicks in an out like a back seat now

It's the bit that the bungee ropes brush against on the side of the fairing, got a pillion seat to sit the thing on.

Might try the tape stuff. Are you sure it doesn't peel off paint?

I've used this stuff twice to IOM and back under tailpack and rear panniers without a scratch. Highly recommended.

If youve tried to remove the decals before you'll know that leccy tape wont get near to removing them.

No matter what you use there will be some slight scratching.

Just t-cut & or polish afterwards and its fine.

You can buy exactly the same stuff as wonderweb matting in the pound shop its for kitchens/drawers as stated before, it comes in a roll about 500mm wide by about 1 or 2 metres long so well worth the pound, you get far more than the wonder web that bike shops sell, and its available in different colours to...i think wonderweb just comes in kack brown or green

I've used insulating tape on all the bikes with no ill effects, the decals would need a fair bit of heat to remove if they're anything like the warning stickers on the Suzuki or the Triumph.

Just tape it up, then you'll have no worries about anything getting between the paint and the bag.


It does look poo when you take off the bag though....

If you`re really worried about scratching your body work, borrow my Kriega luggage.

Keeps everything well clear of the plastics, doesn`t move and is so easy an orangutan could use it.

Same kit Katy & I were using for the Solstice run.
