Ben Spies has announced he will leave the works Yamaha MotoGP team at the end of this season but has not yet revealed where he will be racing in 2013.
In an email to Superbike Planet in America, he said: "I have chosen to leave Yamaha after this season for a litany of reasons. I will explain more when I feel it is appropriate. I'm discussing my situation with my sponsors and they are behind me. There are a few people at Yamaha who I hate to leave. And they know who they are. I wish Yamaha the best. I won't make any further comments until the offical announcement comes out."
The news paves the way for either Valentino Rossi to make a shock return to the team he left to join Ducati, or a promotion for Cal Crutchlow or Andrea Dovizioso to be promoted to a works ride. It may also have saved the bacon of Nicky Hayden too.
