Technical Help - Bike won't start

Hey

Hope someone can help,

My bike wouldn't start this morning 96 Yamaha Diversion XJ600S, I have lights but when I press the ignition there is nothing. When you push it the oil light comes on and when you release it the light goes off so I assume the button is working, this is normal behavior aside from the bike not starting.

There is no noise from the bike when you push the start button - the starter relay doesn't click.

Tried changing the fuses

Checked battery terminals and electrical connections I could get to.

Tried bump start it and jump start from the car - still nothing, no clicking from the starter relay.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Dead/faulty battery.

Have you got a charger for it? Give it a quick charge and try. Do the lights also dim when trying to start it up?

I hate to say it but it sounds like you should have a wee check of your kill switch on the right hand bar.

Hi, tried running it off the car battery and nothing, not even a click from the relay. No the lights are bright and don't dim. The horn works perfect.

The battery is relatively new, maybe a year old, I think it is good but waiting on a multimeter to come through the post to check it properly,

I think it is maybe something to do with the relay as it doesn't click?

1. Check kill switch
2. Check the bike is in neutral
3. Check the side stand switch.

Have you tried tapping starter motor lightly with a hammer and pressing starter at same time ?

If doing the above make sure the car is not running.
I blew a couple of relays on my bike by doing the same thing. Car with the engine running could supply too high a voltage.
OK if you are just using it to charge the battery but if you try to start the bike you could have some problems.
If jump starting from a car the engine should not be running.

Try shorting the 2 positive terminals on your starter solenoid. This should rule out issues with your switches and wiring before the solenoid. :2up

I didn't have the car running as I looked it up on the internet first Image

Ok I'll try and short it first

Make sure it isn't in gear.

Worked it out, corrosion on the starter relay connections, cleaned it up and bike started up again perfect, now for a cup of tea :-)
