Finally got round to attempting chain adjustment on my GPZ and have a couple of questions...

Any suggestions on where I can get a 3/8 drive socket for the axle nut so I can use my torque wrench?

How badly wrong can things go if I don't do it right? I haven't noticed any dodgy handling or anything like that since it was done but is there anything I should be looking out for?

I'm also slightly confused about how tightening the adjuster nut tightens the chain. Looking at it I would have thought that would loosen the chain. Is there some kind of reversing mechanism?

Get a 3/8 to half inch adapter & you will pick up a 1/2 inch drive socket easier (that is what I did). Machine Mart will probably have what you need, yes it will tighten up provided you go the right way.

I got a 3/8" torque wrench from e-bay for 25quid its ideal for the bike cause it goes right down to 10Nm.
On mine it is by turning the tensioner anticlockwise to tighten the chain.
There should also be marks on the top of the adjuster to give you a guide that you are moving both sides by the same amount, if you don't trust these you should turn the adjuster a half turn each side until you get the tension right.
If your still not convinced get a manual with the diagrams showing how to check with a straight edge
