Hi there,
was wondering if anyone knows much about Ducati clutches?

I have a 996 and think the clutch might be going.
When you pull the clutch in it makes a sort of wheezy coughing noise and when pulling off slowly it sort of jumps now and then.

Clutches are something I know nothing about!

I imagine I probably need a new one, but as I will likley have to wait ages to get it looked at I hoped someone might have an idea of what the problem could be and how easy a repair might be.

Do Ducati clutches not normall sound like a bag of spanners?

They sure do, but it now sounds like a bag of spanners with asthma!

My 916 clutch lasted 12000 miles.

Piece of piss to repair though.

Take off the cover. With the bike in gear undo the clutch spring bolts, remove them, the springs and the cover plate. Then swap the plates and reassemble. You don't even have to change the oil. Just get an overhaul kit and it'll take you an hour if you know what you're doing, two if you don't. Just remember to get the plates in the same order as the old ones. Oh, and don' bother doing the cush drive rubbers in the clutch hub. The clutch will be rattling again in weeks.

Was just a bit worried that when I took off the cover I would be hit in the face with springs and plates then have no Idea how to put it back together.
Sounds easy enough though.

Remember also that some of the all-steel plates are slightly dished. They MUST go on the same way round (dished inwards or outwards I can't remember) as they come off.

FWIW save the old all-steel plates. Half a dozen of them welded together then welded to an 18-inch piece of round steel bar bent like a spoon handle make the perfect clutch hub removal tool.
