Just wondering, apart from the sound of tapping you get when your tappets need adjusting but is there any other tell-tale signs or engine symptoms that would suggest the tappets would need adjusting or sorting of some kind...

cheers
If you can't hear them tapping then that only means the gaps are not too big. A worse problem is if the gap is too small. This prevents the valve from closing properly and can burn out both the valve and the seat. Best thing is simply to have them checked as per the recommended service intervals (or earlier if you suspect there is a problem).

Nah i'm enjoying the work on me bike.. be fine once i get my replacement downpipes on i think i will adjust my tappets again... sun is shining today.. dunno how long so i might go and carry on with my bike... i was just wondering if any symptoms reflected on the problem i have when engine hot...
If the valve clearances get tight due to seat recession in the head you will lose some compression. In an alloy overhead cam engine you might expect this loss of compression to be greater when cold than hot. This is because the alloy head casting expands a bit more than the steel valve stem, effectively making the camshaft a bit further from the valve. Well worth taking the time to check the clearances though, as burnt valves are not a lot of fun.
