Quick Carb question- lean or rich?

Post by blagger »

If when the throttle is is opened the revs increase then once closed the revs drop again but sit slightly faster rpm (hangs) then slowly drops back to the idle speed. and if the throttle is 'blipped' the revs slightly drop b4 pick up...

now is the fuel/air mixture screw lean or rich.. as i have read a desctiption where it says if hangs then slowly drop back to idle speed then lean and if drops when 'blipped' is rich.. not my situation seems to encounter both I can't believe it's not butter! its a set of CV crabs

also hard to start when hot and easy to start when cold..

Take out the spark plugs and have a look at the colour of them
If they are black ,sooty or even oily )ish( then it is running way rich.

a perfectly set up bike should have a light brown colour to the plugs

last sat when i checked them they where all black n sooty. i adjusted the carbs to make them lean

i have ran the bike on idle on and off this week and this morning took it for a small run around the block...

i have only checked 2 plugs so far but C1 is slightly tan/ brown still looks like the same from when i cleaned them last weekend.

and C4 has started to soot up again slightly not as bad as b4 but you can tell the difference between C1 and C4 plugs.. so from this i take it that C4 is running a bit Rich... over the next couple of days i will check C2 and C3 and see what they are like..

The usual way to set the idle mixture screws is to adjust them for maximum tickover speed then set the tickover screw for the recommended tickover speed. You probably also need to check the carb balance.

Better if the engine is set up very slightly rich than lean at all.
Too lean and you run the risk of the engine overheating and in worst cases its possible to burn out the crown of the pistons.

have you checked your intake rubbers where your carbs sit in to for leeks. i meen drawing in air. that would make the revs go funny on decline. mite be worth a look. :2up
