17" front wheel convertion on a Gay Blade 1995/96

Can anyone help me at all. Im looking for info on what fits straight in the front of a Gay Blade without any problems. There is a 16" on as standard and im wanting to fit a 17" so i can have a wider range of tyres for it. Any info is a help.

I didn't think there was still a problem with tyre choice for the old Gay Blade?

Theres not but you do get a better selection of tyres in 17".

RVF 400 RR NC35 most popular choice as it already has th same early Gay Blade discs and calipers so it is a known fit. But it is a Mag alloy wheel and almost as rare as wheels for a Gixxer K6/K7 600/750 cost 150 to 250 depending on condition.

I could lend you one to try it out, it has a Diablo 120/70/17 ZR on it. with ProLite discs fitted.

Other options,

VFR400 NC30 fits
baby Gay Blade both types 400 cc both fit
CBR600 early models.((92-98) Check the disc size. looking for 298mm I think.

Check the part number for VTR and the VFR 750 /800 as well.

I've changed from dunlops to michelin pilot sports on my old Gay Blade, its made a big big difference to the handling...........still cannae ride proper though

CBR wheels 10 a penny from any breaker, probably not have discs though.

NC29, baby Gay Blade same, 100 quidish might get discs with it.

NC 30 VFR 400, fairly common 100 to 150 quidish might get discs with it.

NC35 RVF 400, Hard to find for less than 200 quid and no discs, but much lighter.

I have a couple of spares c/w discs etc. they are off the race bike so I think there is a ckhoice of white or black if you want to have a look at them PM me.

i found out this morning that blackbird non inj wheels fit. front and rears and they are 3 spoked ones witch allows you to run a 190 on the rear too.

My theory is that Honda spent a lot of time and effort to produce the bike and it had a 16 inch wheel for a reason.

As Nikki said, tyres for the 16 inch are available in a better range of types and that the only reason for changing in the first place was to get a better choice of tyres.

Change to a 17 inch and you must inform your insurance, and as it is a major change to the geometry of the bike..well...they may refuse to insure it (thats looking on the bad side mind

)

As said by Big Kneed Al (master of the emergency stop & "stand up" comedian), fitting a 17 will slow the steering, fitting a 190 with increase that issue..

For me the 16" is all part of the package that gives the pre-2000 Blades their appeal.

and for those that aren't comfortable with the thought of a wee headshake/tank slapper...........fit a steering damper

I was seriously considering changing mine to a 17" frontwheel as I just couldn't get the hang of riding it, I had a few shots of newer blades and fell in love with them, so easy to ride.

The michelins have given me my confidence back in the handling and it feels like a new bike
