Rear Tyre Wear

I have a CBR 600f, since I bought it in April I have done about 2500 miles. The tyre looks a bit worn in the middle. The tyres were new when I bought the bike. How long would they normally last? Metzeler 2. I am not harsh on the take off.

Way too many variables, weight, riding style, load are all factors.

Ride it till the wear indicators are flush with the tread then replace it.

As has been said above there is lots to take into account.

However for example I used to get 2500 miles out a rear on my R 6 and I get about 2300 out of a rear on my mille.

get used to the "vauge" answers...................
on my cars, I get between 20,000 and 40,000 miles out of the tyres.
I'm fairly sedate as I'm old.
On my bikes, I get between 900 and 3000 miles out of a tyre

3000 is absolutely top whack, driving like my granny would be proud of me.
900 is being a wee bit of a hooligan.
on tracks, we have guys (and one particularly cute gel) here who can trash a back tyre in hours.

bikes eat tyres
round tyre, very small contact area = lots of pressure on what little rubber there is on the road = low life.

sadly, a fact of life on bikes


welcome aboard by the way, get used to the nutters and don't feed them too often.


another thing about the tyres, it's not so much the legality of them as the shape.
one of my bikes would legally do 6-9k miles on a front tyre
but it's a pig to ride when the front is not 'in shape' and I change the front same time as the rear, much nicer bike to ride that way.

tyre costs are a real and significant part of the cost per mile of riding a bike. get used to it.
To put that in perspective, 10 to 15 tanks of fuel is 1 set of tyres = + 300 quid
even more simply 15 quid of petrol = 30 quid of tyre (unless I'm following someone really slow like Noddy and 15 quid of petrol = 15 quid of tyre)

A couple of 900 mile weeekends will wreck a set of boots.

3 and a bit weeks was the shortest a rear tyre lasted me with road riding only.

As stated before so many variables
my past recent experiences;

On GSXR 600 got about 2000 out back tyre on chlamydia tyre.

On my 996 as low as 800 and as good as 1600 from a back tyre, though that was fun run(s) everytime.

On an SV 1000 typically 1800, best 2200

Now on Big Mans Wanger R1200GS with Avon Azaros and rear done 4500 onto it edges, done a trip round Europe and keeps up with most bikes in the corners, excellent tyres

I put a set of roadsmarts on my ZZR1400 and im at 2200 and the rear is very nearly done. Bike tyres dont last long

Thanks for the info. I just thought you would get much more miles per tyre. Not good when the hols are in a few weeks.

The tyres that I have had fitted to the bike are supersport tyres. you get 5000 from a front and half of that from a rear.


I have just put a set of Pirelli Angels on to my bike as I too am fed up of heading into Sillets every 5 -6 weeks.
I will see how I get on with a more sport -touring tyre .

I would suggest that it may be worth looking into for yourself for your next full set of tyres

Thats what Ive got and Ive noticed no difference from any supersport tyres Ive ever used. Looks like I should get 3000+ out the rear. Not bad from a 999 V-twin with my mass on board. I do try to avoid straight lines at all costs though.

Been running 2CT's for a few years now, and always been well pleased with them!! They did let slip on track though, but I think that was down to operator error, i.e. too much juice when they were mega hot.........

Getting between 2k - 3k on a rear, depending on what I'm up to.

Commuting and high speed don't help either....

So my advice is buy a bike and don't use it, except for weekends and except for sunny days. Oh and only use half throttle and don't go above walking pace

I got 7k from the first set of tyres on my Panzer Traktor, and they werent on the bare bones then. (B'stone Battlewings if anyone is interested)

Use Pilot Road Two's.

Around £200 a pair fitted, rear does around 5K, front does around double that..

But that's 33bhp, and a maximum speed of 107kph..

The front just away top get replaced..

No issues with grip, been knee and peg down and still 1/2"-1" to go on the rear.
No real issues in the wet, take it fairly easy when its wet..
