How To :- Removing 'NOT FOR ROAD USE'

As a novice at polishing, I thought I'd give it a quick go and post up on how to remove the 'NOT FOR ROAD USE' from your can to help out any other novice's wanting to have a go at removing this.


1: Grab your can




2: Its handy to use a dremel drill or similar small hand-held drill as your only working on a small area..




3: Use a Grinding wheel to grind down the metal to remove the 'NOT FOR ROAD USE'.







4: Keep grinding until all the letters have been removed. This process will leave a rough surface.





5: Next you will need a polishing pad on your dremel. i used a stiff one to apply the polish compond to the metal.







6: load up you polishing pad with the compond. best done at slow speed..






7: Speed the drill back up and start applying the compond to the metal.





8: Work the the compond over the metal surface. The more you work it the better the results






9: Using a soft polishing pad, remove the excess polish to check your work..








10: you may find you will need to repeat the last few steps using the polishing compond to get a really good finish..






11: The more you work at it the better the finish will be...

would it not have been easier just to drill out the rivets then turn the band inside out an re-rivet it back on to the can ???

Would it also not be easier just to leave it on .Or stick some tape over it for the MOT.Although if its to load it'll fail anyway Im sure i read somewhere its more of an offence if youve tampered with it anyway but cant remember where

Thankfully Triumph were good enough to mark their pipes on the bottom inside where you could never see it without an endoscope but is removing these markings such a great idea? Should plod catch on that you've ground it off then they'll come down on you harder than ever as that's you deliberately trying to hide what you know to be wrong?
And how come none of the holier-than-thou brigade haven't chimed in on this?

Cheers for the comments on the polishing...

any way, you can buy rivet straps unstamped, so if you have done a good enough job who will know if there was anything punched into it b4... + good practice for polishing out any deep scratches from metal in the future and i was bored at the time so thought i'd waste half an hour on it.

Also having a good laugh reading the comments about how morally wrong it is to do it and how much trouble you could get in if getting pulled when prob half you lot run around with no baffles and small plates etc.. ...

as i say all to their own really...

thought it was up to the discretion of the mot tester now and if not happy with the noise will give you a advisory on your mot cert.

Exactly Each to their own.............No real trouble for any of those only a smallish fine but no points so you take your chance Me personally small plate ,no baffles etc etc etc

Just had my R_6 tested and they checked the can for an EU number ........ its not just the "Not for Road Use" thing

my old can had no marking at all on it with just a removable baffle and passed no problems..

only stating for any markings saying Track use only or not for road use.....


the main fact is that if its too loud or not..
