Race tyres - road legal

Post by coullstar »

Picked up a K1 GSXR600 at the weekend and it has a set of Metzler Racetec tyres fitted. I was just looking at the Metzler website and these appear to be race tyres, hence the name.

Are these road legal?
What markings would there be to make sure they are raod legal as I am sure my insurance wouldnt be too happy if I ran these and had a prang?

I have a set of Supercorsas on my bike and I did not like having to drive on them to go and get an mot .
However on the track they Stick like anythng.

If they are a pure track tyre ( I am not sure) then...
You will struggle to Get enough heat into them on the road, and even if you manage that you will struggle to Keep the heat in them .

Swap them off for a set of road Tyres and keep them for a track day ..
You will get much more from them on the track.

I know they come in three compounds but for the life of me I cannot remember which are on the bike.

So you reckon that even if I had the most road orientated compound they would be poo for on the roads? TBH they are just like cut slicks.

Raod legal, but not good for rain or other winter conditions, put them to bed for the winter and sling on a set of Diablos (sp) :2up

You could always try, you might get enough to cover the fitting fee for the new ones. :I can't believe it's not butter! without a history from a known forum user I would not buy S H tyres, Not so with wets though, easyer to see whst you are getting with wets,

You tend to find that some of the heros use them thinking there ace cause they've got em on :roll we have a couple down here :roll

as stated earlier you'll really struggle to get heat into them,at most times of the year, nevermind winter,as on the road, you'll stop and start to often for the heat to stay, also, race compound tyres heat up diferently from road tyres,as road tyres heat the whole tyre, where race ones only get heat to them when they are being used on that piece of tread.

The hero who had the bike before you probably bought them from a real racer as take offs at a fraction of the new price.

Like zax says, put em on the track, and break as deep as you dare while leant over :cool

Thats exactly what he said. Guy only used them for 5-6 warm up laps before changing to his race tyres. Looks like I am gonna need some new tyres, bar-steward :x

I would have thought that as long as theyhave the 'E' mark and don't have 'Not for highway or road' use then they are perfectly legal.
I have used ex race road legal Dunlop D208GP's for a few years now on my TL1000 and rate them highly. No problems as long as you let then warm up.
