Battery help
A couple of months ago I tried to start the bike but the battrey was flat. No surprise there as the battrey was dying anyway, so I jumped it off the car. After a bit of persuassion it sparked into life but it stalled after removing the jump leads. I thought the battrey could be total duff and was draining the supply from the altenator so I removed the battery leads and again jumped it off the car. It started but stalled when I removed the jump leads. Should it have run with the battrey disconnected and if not why not ?.
I don't think theres anything wrong with either the altenator or rec/reg as I'm seeing the voltage rise the correct amount with increased revs. Theres no immobiliser fitted either.
Don't know if it's relevant but for the first few years of having the bike I was going through a battrey a year but put it down to it never being disconnected when laid up over the winter. I bought a Bosch last time and it's lasted about 3 years. Also when I laid the bike up I'm pretty sure the cells were all full but when I went back to it after a good few months (it was never out at all last year) some cells were low and one very low. No signs of leaks either. They were topped up with distilled water. I'll be buying a new battrey anyway but am wondering if theres anything else up that I haven't already checked.

Question answered.
Found this on tinternet.
"The alternator uses the car's battery to create magnetism from which battery charging current is generated. It's an effective system, but it requires a good battery to work. When your car's battery is weak, it not only won't start the car; it won't power the alternator, either."
Thanks for the help Missile

and you would know all about THAT
Quote from Optimate web site=
If your battery is so badly discharged, or damaged, to the point where it has less than 2 Volts, it is probably irrecoverable. Take your battery to your local dealer and ask him to test it on a “BatteryMateâ€￾ tester/charger. He will be able to tell you the battery’s condition within a matter of seconds – a BatteryMate can also recover very deep-discharged batteries, if at all possible.

I called you a knob in response to your "shizzle"
My "advice" comes from reference to the quoted literature. My "knowledge" comes from a University Education.
A little knowledge is dangerous.

You must be like me Scott only type with 2 fingers then, could have typed the report in a month if you used all your fingers to typeShrek wrote:After a 6 month report at college on pb batteries yes I would know.
Come on then let’s hear your theory?
And why the (:knob ) just because anyone dares to challenge your opinion?

I didn’t feel the need to resort to name calling, I merely said that’s shizzle, no wonder no one on here likes you.Missile wrote:I called you a knob in response to your "shizzle"
Apparently so.Missile wrote: A little knowledge is dangerous.
So of your little knowledge what’s your theory then?

I would say the use of the word shizzle does justify being called a knob, irrespective of whether you're right or wrong. You could easily have said 'I humbly disagree with your opinion my friend'.

Having said that....
shizzle was a lot more fun. :I can't believe it's not butter!
