VFR 800 fi Gauges

Can anyone guide me towards fixing a gauge problem I have with my '99 VFR 800 fi?? My digital clock, temp gauge, trip meter, etc have stopped working. I've checked all my fuses and as many of the connectors as I can but nothing faulty found. I put a new battery in as the previous one was less then effective however that hasn't fixed it either.

All other electrical bits and pieces work.

ANY hints and tips would be very much appreciated.

If you are happy taking the bike to bits ( and have a garage because it might take a day to do) then get the fairing of and trace all the connectors from the back of the instruments back to the fusebox . also chack for any furred up connections under the fuse box or anywhere corrosion can form between the battery and the instruments.

It could be something as simple as a furred up connection

To get tothe instruments on the YZFR6 you have to virtually take all the plastics off the bike. Not sure what the Honda is like to take appart.
Dickie on the board had one of those VFr's He might have some further suggestions.

Thanks for the feedback and suggestion Zax. Unfortunately I don't have a garage so it would be a 'hope for the best weather' tear down on my driveway. I'm sure it'll be something simple as everything was just perfect before the winter and now it has this fault. Thanks again.

could be damp/corrosion in the connection for the gauges, mayby try pulling the connectors and cleaning the contacts.
Does the bike live outside?
It could also be a bad earth, this may be under the tank?

Yes, the bike currently lives outside but I do try to keep it covered as much as possible, especially if i'm away for long periods of time. It's due a service next month but i'm a bit reluctant to give any shop a 'green light' to find the fault. If we get good weather this next week i'll try stripping off the plastics and see what I can find.

It might be worth puting up a post on the board to find other Aberdeen bikers that live near you in the Inverurie area that would be willing to lend you some garage space for a weekend . You never know for the price of a few beers you might even get a willing helper to help you complete the job in half the time.

We are a pretty helpfull bunch on the board.

At least when the bike is in a lock up you dont have to worry about getting it completed in one afternoon .

Cheers Zax. I'm away out of the country on Saturday for 2 weeks so here's hoping I manage to get it sorted before then. Any assistance would most certainly be appreciated in the form of some liquid refreshment or other suitable stuff ......

Only just saw this.

It's most likely corrosion on the pcb tracks behind the instruments.

Dickie, thank you very much for the reply. That's a great site and has now been added to my favs. I thought it was battery / charging related but if luck is on my side it'll simply be corrosion.

Well I finally got the news from our friendly Honda :I can't believe it's not butter! shop and it is indeed corrosion on the PCB tracks

. Only solution is a new board [ouch!!]. To top it off the regulator was found to be on its last legs so thats another coupla hundred quid. Oh well, can't complain really, the bike has cost me virtually nothing since i've had it.

Common Honda fault apparently,mine went a while back, and I replaced it with a Honda one, then it went again the other week

Got a new one as described in this thread and it was considerably cheaper than the original, and even looks better constructed, with cooling fins to help with the heat dissipation, (unlike the Honda part)

Takes about 6 min's to fit, two bolts and a multiplug.

After seeing the new toys in the showroom today I certainly hope my trusty VFR lasts more than a week or i'd be forced to go for one of them new toys....good lady permitting of course
