Running hot.

Post by dedpidgin2 »

After finally managing to get the gixxer going I've found that it seems to be running very hot. It wasn't exactly cold today but it seemed, from what I can recall, to be running hotter than in summer! About 78-82 on the open road. It's always run hotter than my old Kwaks but figured that was just the way it was... but this was hotter than I've seen it on any day, once out in the open.

Checked oil and coolant levels.... they're okay. (And turned it off and on again - piss off Big Kneed Al (master of the emergency stop & "stand up" comedian)! ;) )

Any ideas?

Anyway, to clarify, my last bike ran around 65 once you got moving. This bikes used to run around 75-77 from what I recall. It's the sudden jump to 80+ on a relatively cool day that got me curious.

were your revs high as that could prob cause the temp to increase

When running on the open road my TT usually runs frm the high 80's to mid nineties. In town though it heats up fas with the fan kicking in at 104 until the temp comes down to 100.

So basically... don't worry about it is what you're saying! It's a different bike and it behaves differently... I can live with that! :-)

As for my revs... they're always high, it's a 600 innit! ;)

If you're worried then renew your coolant and oil otherwise, as you say, just live with it.

My 750 runs at 185 to 205 F (import from the states :roll) and the fan kicks in at 220 F and switches off at 200 F if that is any help.

78 to 82 on the open road doesnt sound abnormal to me.

My R1 generally runs about 80 to 85ish. It doesnt like town as it heats up quick and the fan kicks in at 105 then shuts off at 100.

I reckon yours sounds about right. :2up

Basically as long as it isnt creaping up more than where iot seems to sit naturally you should be okay, if a bike is overheating it will continue to do so.

best thing is to take it for a run until it gets hot, get home then let it tick over, make a cup of tea etc and watch it whilst enjoying your leafy beverage.

needle will rise a bit then the fan (SHOULD) come on, might not.

if it sits at a constant temp your bike is fine.

Usual checks, are you losing water etc.

Another thing to look into is to tajke off your radiator and hoses and flush the system with a cleaner\degreaser and rinse thoroughly. this should remove any crud that has built up over time and may reduce your temp. (this sort of thing should be done every few years if you use bike infrequently. every 5 if used a lot. :2up
